Mumbai : The IIT-Bombay has launched a new teaching method for computer languages.
Currently, they are being taught in a classroom for a substantial fee. Now, one can learn them through audio-visual medium free of charge.
The Spoken Tutorials programme, as it is called, was demonstrated at a press conference at IIT-Bombay on Friday.
Its principal investigator and founder Prof Kannan Moudgalya, faculty member at IIT-B, said the Tutorial teaches programming languages, office tools, graphic, and circuit design tools through audio-visual streaming in computers and other personal devices.
This programme is being entirely funded by the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT) of the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.
This facility is offered free of charge to students.
Prof Moudgalya, while explaining the benefits of the programme, said: “Spoken Tutorials considerably reduces time to impart training. Usually, it takes about 40 hours of instructions to cover the
curriculum of the ‘C’ programming language. Spoken Tutorials achieves that in 20 audio-visual clips of 10 minutes each. Timed transcript of the entire audio file is provided alongside so students can practise simultaneously while watching the clip”.
IIT-B faculty said the project can help students in far-flung areas to clear their doubts and understand the subjects better.
It can improve employment chances of students.
The Spoken Tutorials project team has also trained over 300,000 students through 7,000 workshops over the past three years, said Shyama Iyer, the national Co-ordinator for the programme.
“We conduct the workshops for free, whenever an individual or an educational institution asks us to. One can also download tutorial content from our website (www.spoken-tutorial.org) and learn on their own”, added Iyer.
