Navi Mumbai: In a bid to promote environmental awareness and sustainability, students from municipal and private schools across Navi Mumbai actively participated in "Waste-to-Wealth" workshops organized by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). Held under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, these workshops are part of the environmental conservation campaign running from April 22 (World Earth Day) to May 1.
During Thursday’s sessions, students transformed everyday waste materials — such as plastic bottles, old clothes, empty boxes, and chocolate wrappers — into useful and decorative items like vases, showpieces, and plant pots. Teachers demonstrated creative recycling techniques and engaged students in hands-on activities.
"By turning waste into useful items, we can significantly reduce household garbage and contribute to a cleaner environment," said a teacher participating in the workshop. "It is vital that children learn these values early, as they are the future caretakers of our planet."
"The initiative not only nurtured creativity but also aimed to build a strong environmental mindset among students. Instead of discarding waste, students were encouraged to innovate and repurpose items, giving them a second life," a NMMC official said.
Under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Education Sangharatna Khillare, parents were also involved, with many attending the sessions to witness their children's creations. Schools across Navi Mumbai also held collective pledges where students, teachers, and some parents vowed to conserve the Earth and curb plastic use.
"These activities leave a lasting impression. When children take these habits home, they influence their families too," said Khillare, adding, "That’s how real change begins – from young minds to entire communities."
