Public Gathering At Mumbai Central On April 16 To Support Renaming After Nana Shankar Sheth

The renaming of Mumbai Central is especially symbolic, intended to honor Nana Jagannath Shankarsheth (1803–1865) — an influential educationist, philanthropist, and social reformer who played a key role in shaping the infrastructure and institutions of early Bombay.

The Nana Shankar Sheth Namkaran Sangharsh Committee has issued a heartfelt appeal to the public, urging all admirers of the legendary social reformer Nana Jagannath Shankarsheth to gather at Mumbai Central Terminus on April 16 at 10 AM. The gathering aims to accelerate the movement to rename the station as Nana Shankar Seth Mumbai Terminus.

However, Maharashtra Cabinet has already approved the renaming proposal, and it now awaits final approval from the Union Government. The committee believes that strong public support will help fast-track the process and give due recognition to one of Mumbai’s greatest visionaries.

"This is part of a broader initiative by the Maharashtra government to rename several colonial-era railway stations across Mumbai to better reflect the city’s indigenous identity and cultural heritage" said an official adding that the other proposed station name changes include Curry Road to Lalbaug, Sandhurst Road to Dongri, Marine Lines to Mumbadevi, Charni Road to Girgaon, Cotton Green to Kala Chowki, Dockyard Road to Mazgaon, and King’s Circle to Tirthankar Parswanath.

The renaming of Mumbai Central is especially symbolic, intended to honor Nana Jagannath Shankarsheth (1803–1865) — an influential educationist, philanthropist, and social reformer who played a key role in shaping the infrastructure and institutions of early Bombay. Known as the “architect of Mumbai,” Nana Shankar Sheth was instrumental in founding schools, hospitals, and civic bodies, and was a pioneer in the city’s railway and urban planning efforts.

“Renaming Mumbai Central after Nana Shankar Sheth is not just a name change — it’s a tribute to the roots of Mumbai’s development and to a man whose contributions helped build this great city,” said a member of the committee.

The committee invites citizens, historians, cultural groups, and youth organizations to participate in the April 16 event to show solidarity and push for swift action on the proposal.
