Thane: Part of five-storey residential building collapses, no casualties reported

Some portion of a five-storey residential building in Daighar area of Thane city collapsed, but nobody was injured in the incident, civic officials said on Saturday.

Parts of a five-storey Jayanta Apartment, a residential building located in Daighar Gaon Naka in the Daighar area of Thane city, collapsed on Friday night.

"Fortunately, no casualties were reported from the site," said an official from the regional disaster management cell (RDMC), Thane.

Avinash Sawant, chief of the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC), Thane said, "Soon after receiving the information about the building collapse in the Daighar area, we reached the spot and saw that the building has fallen on one side. The Diaghar police officials along with Torrent Electricity personnel, disaster management officer and staff, one bike ambulance, assistant commissioner of Diva ward committee, executive engineer of the construction department, deputy engineer, ward officer, former corporators and fire station personnel reached the spot to take care of the situation. No casualties were reported at the site."

Sawant added, "15 shops were located on the ground floor of the building, and all the shopkeepers were rescued safely with the help of Daighar police personnel. There were six rooms on each of the five floors of the building, out of those, three families residing on the first floor and five families residing on the second floor were evacuated safely. The rest of the building was already been vacated."

"Due to security reasons, the building has been evacuated at present and the electricity supply to the building has been disconnected. The building has further been sealed by the local police as a precautionary measure. The Chawl and houses around the building were also evacuated, and the civic officials made accommodations in the TMC school nearby for the residents. However, the residents refused to move to the school and arranged accommodation with their relatives," informed Sawant.

"The building was demolished on Saturday. The building has been already marked to be pulled down for road widening work. Also as a precautionary measure, the entire area around the building has been cordoned off," informed Sawant.
