Panvel: Ban on single-use plastic from July 1, PMC to conduct awareness campaign

In its jurisdiction, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) will implement the ban on single-use plastic from July 1. In order to create among citizens and strict implementation of the ban, the civic body will conduct an awareness campaign across the city.

The civic officials have already started visiting the market areas and public places to spread awareness about the same before implementing the ban.

As per the decision, single-use plastic items are restricted which include plastic and polystyrene (thermocol) for decoration and packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards and cigarette packets, earbuds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping bags, stirrers among others.

All types of plastic bags (carry bags including non-woven bags) with and without handle, dish, bowl, container will also be banned. Plastic or PVC banners less than 100 micron under the Maharashtra Plastics and Thermocol Notification 2018, compostable plastic (excluding waste and nursery bags) will also not be allowed to be sold.

National and State level control rooms to be set up for checking illegal manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of banned single use plastic items.
