Mumbai: Following directives from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the state police machinery has sprung into action. Illegal Bangladeshi nationals residing in Maharashtra are being identified and directly deported to Bangladesh. In Mumbai alone, over 150 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been detained in the past four days, and the process of deporting them back to their country has been initiated.

Significantly, no criminal cases are being registered against these infiltrators—instead, they are being immediately deported from India. A total of 600 Bangladeshi nationals have been dealt with between January and April, with 350 individual cases recorded during this four-month span, said Joint CP (Law and Order) Satyanarayan Chaudhary.

These Bangladeshi nationals are illegally crossing the India-Bangladesh border, a practice ongoing for years. Once inside India, they forge identity documents to pass off as Indian citizens and spread across various states. The number of such infiltrators has risen significantly in recent years.

Since 2024, the Mumbai and Maharashtra police have intensified their operations against illegal Bangladeshi settlers. The crackdown grew even more rigorous in 2025, with January to March witnessing the highest number of actions against infiltrators compared to the entire year of 2024. Although the pace of action slowed slightly in April, it picked up again following fresh orders issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on April 30
