Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane's backing of the 'Malhar Certification' – a platform to certify 'Jhatka' mutton shops run exclusively by members of the Hindu community – sparked political controversy, drawing criticism from Muslim lawmakers. Even his allies have distanced themselves from the idea, with neither the BJP nor leaders from Ajit Pawar’s NCP supporting the proposal.

NCP (Ajit Pawar) MLC Amol Mitkari stated, “What can I say to Nitesh Rane? He has become a senior minister now. His statements reflect his personal opinion. Our ideology is rooted in the principles of Shahu, Phule, and Ambedkar, and we will continue to uphold that.”

Ameen Patel, Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, stated that he prefers halal mutton over Jhatka mutton as he believes it is the most hygienic. He also mentioned that halal mutton is in high demand in Europe and America and should not become a point of division between Hindus and Muslims. Commenting on Rane’s statement, Patel added humorously, “Yesterday, Rane was eating mutton. I will ask him in the Assembly which mutton he had.”

Commenting on the issue, SP MLA Raees Sheikh stated, “For the first time, Nitesh Rane has supported an alternative. If people want to eat Malhar meat, they can do so. Rane should also clarify whether the government supports his stance on Malhar.”

NCP (Sharad Pawar) MLA Jitendra Awhad has criticised the move, calling it an effort to stir up tensions between Hindus and Muslims. “In Maharashtra, the situation is unclear. People are now questioning whether they should consume halal or Malhar meat. It seems like an attempt is being made to create new conflicts and ignite Hindu-Muslim tensions. Until now, butchers and meat sellers have been operating together peacefully, even in small villages. So, why create unnecessary controversy? Doesn’t this division based on communal hatred in Maharashtra raise any concerns?” Awhad asked.
