Thane: The opposition demonstrated at the Maharashtra legislature complex, alleging that the BJP-led administration favoured a private firm for a major tunnel project in Thane and asserted it was connected to a ₹3,000 crore scam.

In May, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) terminated the tender process for the twin tunnel project between Thane and Borivali after L&T, which had been disqualified, sought appeal in the Supreme Court.

Positioned on the steps of the Vidhan Bhavan complex, MLAs and MLCs from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) chanted slogans and asserted that the government terminated the contract solely due to concerns about potential Supreme Court repercussions. The monsoon session of the legislative council and state assembly has been in progress since Monday.

The demonstration featured notable opposition figures such as Ambadas Danve (Shiv Sena UBT), Satej Patil (Congress), and Jayant Patil (NCP). Danve condemned the government for moving forward with a disputed ₹ 3,000 crore initiative amid significant concerns, branding it a scam.

Patil pointed out the possible conflict of interest, emphasizing that the contractor awarded was a significant contributor via electoral bonds, raising concerns about the government's transparency.

Jayant Patil called for a reassessment of all agreements with Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd, deemed the "preferred contractor." Demonstrations featured messages highlighting the disregard for farmers while favoring the contractor. Danve pledged to continue addressing these governance matters in both Houses until suitable measures were implemented.
