Mumbai: North Mumbai MP Ravindra Waikar has urged Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to expedite the long-delayed redevelopment of Jayant Chawl and Jamuna Chawl near the Jogeshwari Caves. In a letter sent to the Deputy CM, Waikar requested a joint meeting with the concerned authorities to resolve the issue and provide relief to families who have been homeless for over 18 years.
About Jogeshwari Caves
The Jogeshwari Caves, classified as a Grade I heritage site under the Archaeological Survey of India, fall under a prohibited zone where no construction is permitted within 100 meters of the monument, as per a ruling by the Bombay High Court. Despite the historical significance of the site, the surrounding area has been home to a dense population for the past 50–60 years.
Redevelopment work in the area had begun through private developers, but it came to a halt following the court ruling. As a result, projects like Jamuna Chawl, Jayant Niwas, and Brahman Wadi remain incomplete, leaving many families without shelter. Developers had already evacuated residents and abandoned work mid-way, further worsening the situation.
Waikar’s letter highlights the plight of 26 buildings in Jayant Chawl (including 14 residential and 9 non-residential structures) and 19 buildings in Jamuna Niwas (15 residential and 4 non-residential), all still awaiting justice. Moreover, a four-storey building in Jamuna Niwas is ready for occupancy but remains without an Occupancy Certificate from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, leaving residents deprived of basic civic amenities.
Terming the issue as a serious matter of public interest, Waikar emphasized the need for immediate intervention by the government to ensure alternative housing and rehabilitation for the affected families. He has called for a joint meeting with all stakeholders to find a viable solution within the legal framework.
