MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court on Friday began hearing the bail application of NRI Nooriya Haveliwala who was convicted of killing two persons, including a policeman, in January 2010 while driving her SUV under the influence of alcohol. Advocate Abad Ponda, representing Haveliwala, pointed out that in other cases, where the accused has been sentenced to less than seven years of imprisonment, the State would not have opposed the bail plea. Ponda also brought to the notice of the court that even the Supreme Court, which considers a penalty of seven years or less as a short sentence, grants bail to the accused.
