At a time when the shortage of vaccines has slowed down the vaccination drive for COVID-19, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) used the vaccine efficiently and ensured low wastage. The civic body recorded only 1.27 percent wastage of COVID 19 vaccines so far.

As per the data shared by the Health Department of NMMC, the civic body received a total of 3,79,600 doses of COVID 19 vaccines and the civic body have taken a total of 3,69,480 doses from the stocks. Of the total of 3,69,480 doses, the civic body administered a total of 3,64,805 doses. “Till date, only 4,675 doses have been wasted which is just 1.27 percent of the total doses taken from the stocks,” said a senior civic official. He added that this number is low as compared to many cities in India.

The vaccine is provided in a box, containing 10 doses and it is advised that all 10 doses should be administered within a period of 4 hours after opening the box. However, the administration believes that a maximum of 10 percent doses can go waste. “Out of 110 doses, 100 doses are expected to be administered,” said the official.

However, the NMMC planned number of doses at each vaccination center as per the need and demand and reduced the rate of wastage to only 1.27 percent. “Therefore, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, which is leading in vaccination of maximum number of citizens in the availability of vaccines is also in the forefront in saving vaccines,” added the official.
