The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has received a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) for starting the first batch of Post Graduate Degree (PG) in the proposed medical college in Vashi hospital. Permission from the ministry is important to start a post-graduate medical college. The civic body has planned to start the first batch in the proposed medical college from May 2023.

During the first and second wave of Covid, the civic body faced an acute shortage of medical staff including doctors and nurses and it had to rely on contract workers.

Abhijit Bangar, the municipal commissioner said that the NOC from the MoHFW is important to starting a medical college. “The stress is being given to complete the administrative and health department paperwork,” said Bangar.

As per the plan, in the first phase, five branches of Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedic, Gynecology and Pediatrics will be started in the proposed planned PG Medical College. In this connection, the civic body has also planned to find a separate place and arrange an administrative and residential complex (hostel).

Earlier, a committee was set up under the chairmanship of additional commissioner Sanjay Kakade to start a post-graduate course at Vashi and Airoli hospitals. Based on the report, the five branches of Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedic, Gynecology, and Pediatrics were chosen. MBBS doctors can pursue further studies at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science and they will get an opportunity to work at Navi Mumbai Municipal Hospital in Vashi and Nerul primarily.

“This is an effort to provide super specialty facilities like Surgical Intensive Care, Medical Intensive Care, Pediatric Intensive Care, Emergency and Trauma Services in the Municipal Hospital. Through this, the health department of the corporation will be empowered and the citizens of Navi Mumbai will be provided better quality health facilities in the municipal hospital,” said Bangar.
