A special meeting was arranged by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to encourage the use of tertiary treated recycled water in construction. The meeting, held under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, brought together construction professionals, architects, and civil contractors, who expressed their commitment to adopting this sustainable practice.
During the discussion, Assistant Director of Town Planning Somnath Kekaan emphasized that using treated wastewater in construction and industries would help conserve drinking water and position Navi Mumbai as a leader in sustainable urban development. Additional City Engineer Arvind Shinde provided detailed insights into NMMC’s water supply system and the advanced sewage treatment plants that purify wastewater for non-drinking purposes.

NMMC currently operates seven sewage treatment plants, supplying treated water for landscaping and other uses. Additionally, two tertiary treatment plants in Koparkhairane and Airoli, with a combined capacity of 40 MLD, provide recycled water to 55 industries and 11 Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) plants in the MIDC region. The initiative is being expanded to include more industries.
“With large-scale redevelopment projects underway across Navi Mumbai, the municipal body stressed the importance of reducing reliance on drinking water for construction. A circular promoting the use of tertiary treated water was issued on February 12, to reinforce this policy,” NMMC Commissioner Dr Shinde said.
