Navi Mumbai: In just 20 days, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has collected Rs 1.4 lakh in fines and seized over 214 kilograms of banned single-use plastic items as part of its intensified anti-plastic enforcement campaign across the city.
From June 1 to June 20, action was taken against 27 shops and commercial establishments found violating the plastic ban. These actions were part of a sustained campaign under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting eco-friendly alternatives.
The campaign has been carried out by anti-plastic squads operating in all ward offices, supported by two special mobile teams working independently in each administrative zone.
In the Belapur division, officials fined a shopkeeper Rs 5,000 and confiscated 1 kilogram of banned plastic. In Nerul, another trader was penalised Rs 5,000, and 1.5 kilograms of single-use plastic were seized.
The Vashi division saw fines amounting to Rs 10,000 imposed on two shopkeepers, with 2 kilograms of plastic seized. In one of the largest seizures, the Koparkhairane division reported fines totalling Rs 20,000 collected from four businesses, along with the confiscation of 129 kilograms of banned plastic material.
In the Ghansoli division, Rs 10,000 in fines were collected from two shops and 6 kilograms of plastic were seized. The Digha division reported the seizure of 3 grams of plastic from a single establishment, which was fined Rs 5,000.
Zone I's flying squad took action against three businesses, collecting Rs 15,000 in fines and seizing 1.8 kilograms of plastic. Zone II’s flying squad conducted action against 13 traders, collecting Rs 70,000 in fines and seizing 73.1 kilograms of plastic.
The enforcement efforts have been carried out under the direction of Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar, and coordinated by Zone I Deputy Municipal Commissioner Somanath Potre, Solid Waste Management Deputy Commissioner Dr. Ajay Gade, and Zone II Deputy Municipal Commissioners Sanjay Shinde and Smita Kale.
