Concerned about rising safety and hygiene issues caused by irresponsible pet ownership, a formal appeal has been made to the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The letter was written by Kharghar resident Jigar Dineshchandra Doshi. Doshi expressed alarm over the increasing number of dogs being allowed to roam in public spaces without leashes or mouth covers, posing a risk especially to senior citizens and children.
He pointed out that incidents involving sudden movements or aggression by such pets have become more common, creating a serious public safety issue. Furthermore, Doshi highlighted the growing problem of pet waste in residential areas, footpaths, and parks. He noted that many dog owners fail to clean up after their pets, resulting in unhygienic conditions, foul odors, and potential health hazards.
In his appeal, Doshi called on the Maharashtra government to introduce and strictly enforce state-wide regulations to address these concerns. He urged for increased public awareness about responsible pet handling, the creation of designated dog-walking areas, a platform for citizens to report violations, and financial penalties for those who neglect proper pet waste disposal. He also recommended the installation of waste bins and the provision of disposal bags in busy public spaces and residential neighborhoods.
Emphasising the need for proactive action, Doshi stated that Maharashtra, as a progressive state, should set a strong example in maintaining a balance between pet ownership rights and public welfare. He concluded his letter by requesting immediate intervention from the Chief Minister to ensure a cleaner, safer, and more responsible environment for all residents.
