Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai District Congress has demanded strict legal action against individuals spreading defamatory and misleading content about senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on social media platforms.

WhatsApp Group Circulates False Claim of Rahul Gandhi's Apology in Savarkar Remark Case

Congress spokesperson Ravindra Sawant submitted a written complaint to Nerul Police Station, highlighting that a false post was circulated on a WhatsApp group named Dattatreya Society Sector 2 at 1:24 PM on July 25. The post featured an edited image of Rahul Gandhi along with the caption: “My Lord, please grant me bail. I can’t stay inside, I am not Savarkar.”

It further claimed that Gandhi had apologised via telephone in a Nashik court in a case related to remarks about freedom fighter Veer Savarkar, and secured bail by paying Rs 15,000.

Congress Says Image Intended to Malign Leader and Create Discord

Sawant clarified that Rahul Gandhi had not issued any apology and had complied with the court's directive by attending the hearing via video conferencing. He alleged that the viral post was a deliberate attempt to malign Rahul Gandhi’s image, spread falsehoods, and provoke social unrest.

Leaders Demand Action for Spreading Fake News Under Guise of Satire

“The intent behind such misinformation is to mislead the public, tarnish the reputation of a national leader, and create political and social discord,” said Sawant. “Strict action should be taken against those responsible for spreading fake content under the guise of satire or commentary.”

Party Delegation Submits Memorandum at Nerul Police Station

Along with Sawant, several Congress leaders including Santosh Shetty, Nasir Hussain, Dr. Manoj Upadhyay, Vidya Bhāndekar, Krishna Pujari, Taranath Shetty, Shantaram Shetty, Uttam Pisal, and Pralhad Gaikwad were present during the submission of the memorandum at the police station.

The Congress has urged the police to register a case against the accused and initiate immediate investigation.
