Navi Mumbai: Disturbed by the persistent and excessive noise pollution in the CBD Belapur area along the Sion-Panvel highway, local residents have submitted a memorandum to Public Works Department (Konkan Bhavan, Navi Mumbai) and the Regional Officer of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, Konkan Region.
Memorandum submitted to PWD and Pollution Control Board
The memorandum demands the immediate installation of noise barriers along the residential sides of the flyovers on the Sion-Panvel Highway.
The memorandum states that the Sion-Panvel road is a crucial route for traffic entering and exiting Mumbai city. As a result, there is heavy and continuous movement of large vehicles and other traffic round the clock.
Highway proximity blamed for excessive decibel levels
"Since residential buildings in the CBD Belapur area are located in very close proximity to the highway, the resulting noise pollution levels are significantly higher than the limits prescribed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB),"said a resident
The memorandum given to the Chief Engineer of the department further complains that this noise pollution is causing sleep disturbances, heart and stress-related issues among the elderly, difficulties in concentration for children, and hearing problems among residents.
It also mentions that due to the constant noise, windows and doors need to remain closed, leading to a lack of natural ventilation and daylight inside homes.
Locals seek 6-metre noise barriers on flyover sides
Residents have demanded that 6-meter-tall noise-absorbing metal barriers be erected on the sides of the flyovers that face residential areas. They have expressed confidence that such measures will significantly reduce the noise pollution in the locality.
Local citizens and Sajag Nagrik Manch lead campaign
The memorandum was signed by several local citizens in support. Vijay More, Pramod Jadhav, and Dayanand Patil, along with Sajag Nagrik Manch coordinator Sudhir Dani, submitted the memorandum to the Regional Officer of the Pollution Control Board.
