Navi Mumbai: In a significant step toward enhancing Navi Mumbai’s tourism appeal, 10,000 square meters of land has been transferred from the Forest Department to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) for the development of the Gavalidev area in Ghansoli into a natural tourist destination. The initiative aims to preserve the site’s natural beauty while providing quality infrastructure for visitors.

NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde recently conducted an on-site inspection of the ongoing development work and issued key directives to ensure sustainable and aesthetic growth of the location. The Commissioner was accompanied by City Engineer Shirish Aradwad, Executive Engineer Yashwant Kapse, and representatives from the architectural and contractor teams.
About Gavalidev
Gavalidev, located in the Sahyadri hill ranges within the MIDC region of Ghansoli, is a traditional and culturally significant site. During the monsoon, it attracts large numbers of nature lovers from Navi Mumbai and Mumbai. Recognizing its popularity, NMMC has initiated work to enhance the area into a full-fledged natural tourist spot under the District Planning Committee’s Tourism Development Scheme, with a sanctioned budget of Rs. 5 crore.
"The project includes the construction of paved walkways, gazebos, portable toilets, stone structures, gabion walls, rainwater drainage systems, directional signage, electrification, and water pipelines. Currently, 25% of the gabion wall construction has been completed," said Dr. Shinde. He reviewed the detailed site plan recently and suggested using locally available natural stone instead of artificial materials to maintain the area's ecological integrity.
He further instructed that proper drainage channels be constructed on either side of the steps and pathways to manage rainwater effectively before the monsoon begins. Arrangements for drinking water and clean sanitation facilities at various points along the tourist route were also emphasized.
The commissioner underlined that Gavalidev should be developed using natural materials to allow citizens to enjoy the serenity of nature while providing all necessary facilities for a relaxing outdoor experience.
