Navi Mumbai: Following reports of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has appealed to citizens not to panic and to seek immediate medical attention at municipal hospitals if symptoms are observed. GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system, often triggered by infections within the past six weeks.

According to health officials, diarrhea— typically caused by consuming raw or undercooked poultry and meat—is a common precursor to GBS. Respiratory infections may also trigger the condition, though many patients may not recall having had such infections.

Common symptoms include sudden weakness or paralysis in the hands or legs, tingling or numbness, and difficulty walking. The condition can progress rapidly, potentially leading to paralysis if untreated. Though GBS is not contagious, it can affect individuals of all age groups.

NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde emphasized the importance of early detection and treatment. He confirmed that public hospitals in Vashi, Nerul, and Airoli are equipped to manage GBS cases.

Health authorities advise preventive measures such as drinking boiled and filtered water, maintaining personal hygiene, consuming fresh and fully cooked food, and avoiding storage of raw and cooked food together. Citizens are also urged to keep water storage tanks properly covered to avoid contamination.

Dr. Shinde said, "If anyone faces any of the listed symptoms, they immediately visit their nearest NMMC health center or hospital. Necessary facilities and treatment have been made available."
