Navi Mumbai: Catchment area of Morbe Dam receives only 286 mm of rainfall until June 2022

The Morbe dam is located in Khalapur Taluka of Raigad district and it supplies water to Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and a few CIDCO-administered nodes.

While for the last two days, the urban areas are getting good rainfall, the catchment areas of Morbe dam in Khalapur in Raigad district received scanty rainfall.

In the last 24 hours, it received just 35 mm of rainfall and the total rainfall during this monsoon has only reached 286 mm. In the same period, in 2021, the catchment area already had 790 mm of rainfall.

The Morbe dam is located in Khalapur Taluka of Raigad district and it supplies water to Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and a few CIDCO-administered nodes.

As per the data provided by officials at Morbe dam, the current water level is 69.80 meters, while in the same period last year, it was 75.14 meters. With the current level, the dam can meet the water demand, not before August 20.

Normally, the catchment area of Morebe dam, which is located in Khalapur taluka in Raigad district, requires around 3,250 mm of rainfall to overflow the dam.

Last year, there was around 3,700 mm of rainfall throughout the monsoon. The civic body did not take any water cuts as it had sufficient water levels to meet the demand.

NMMC requires around 463 million litres (ML) of water per day, of which, around 393 ml it gets from the Morbe dam and the remaining is supplied by Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

According to an official at Morbe dam, the gross storage of the dam is 190.890 MCM and at present levels, the gross storage is 52.003 MCM which is around 27.24 per cent of the total capacity.

Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours, the NMMC saw around 95 mm of rainfall with the maximum in Nerul at around 127 mm.
