Navi Mumbai: A 40-year-old man from Nashik, died by suicide on early Wednesday morning by jumping off a newly constructed bridge over Vashi Creek. His body was recovered by the Vashi police with assistance from the fire brigade.
According to police, the deceased, identified as Kiran Vithuba Bachhav, had first attempted to access the bridge around 10 pm on Tuesday, but a security guard at the construction site stopped him. He left the area but returned around 1 am, once again trying to reach the bridge. When the security guard intervened a second time, Bachhav pretended to leave for Mankhurd and managed to evade the guard’s sight. He then ran toward the bridge and jumped into the creek.
“He seemed drunk to me. Since the bridge is under construction, it was easier for him to climb and jump. This is the first such incident on this bridge. I had stopped him twice,” Vilas Chaughule, the security guard at the bridge said.
Chaughule guard immediately alerted the Vashi police, who, along with the fire brigade, arrived at the scene. Bachhav was retrieved from the water and rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
“We found only a wallet that had his aadhar card. The card bore NAshik address and we have alerted the Nashik police to find his relatives. We suspect he could be a labourer working somewhere in Vashi,” a police officer from Vashi police station said. As per his aadhar card, he is from Sonaj village in Nashik.
An accidental death report has been registered with Vashi police and once the family is traced, police are hopeful to find the reason behind the extreme step.
