A 32-year-old man died after a truck he was travelling in, fell off a bridge on old Mumbai-Pune highway near Panvel on Sunday evening.
According to the police, the truck was going towards Pune from Panvel's side. As it was crossing a bridge near the JNPT junction at around 9.30 pm, the driver lost control of the vehicle. The truck then hit a sidewall and fell on the road below.
The deceased was identified as Hassan Khan and he had received severe injuries in the accident. “He was rushed to a nearby hospital by a few local residents, but he was declared dead after some time,” said a police officer.
The truck driver jumped off the vehicle before it fell down and then ran away from the spot. According to the onlookers he was over-speeding the vehicle, while the condition of the road was not good. “We have registered a case of rash driving against the driver and we will soon arrest him,” the officer said.
Meanwhile, the police have appealed to motorists to drive vehicles safely during the monsoon as roads become slippery and chances of accidents rise. “Due to heavy rainfall, roads develop potholes and over-speeding can be dangerous. Traffic police are already catching those vehicles. But motorists need to drive safely especially at night,” added the official.
