Mumbai’s transport landscape is gearing up for a dramatic transformation. By the end of 2025, four new Metro corridors are expected to partially open, giving lakhs of daily commuters better and faster travel options. Alongside the Metro expansion, the city will also roll out the Mumbai One app, a single digital platform that brings multiple modes of public transport under one roof.

Metro Expansion Picks Up Pace

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is constructing a 12-line Metro network spanning 337.1 km across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Mid-Day reported. So far, four lines covering 58.9 km are operational, while eight more — stretching across 165.7 km — are under active construction.

Here's what commuters can expect soon:

Metro Line 9 (Red Line)

Route: Dahisar to Mira Bhayander

Opening: December 2025 (Dahisar to Kashigaon stretch, 4.5 km)

Status: 98% work completed

This 10.5 km elevated line will connect with existing Lines 2A and 10, improving east-west connectivity in the suburbs.

Metro Line 2B (Yellow Line)

Route: DN Nagar to Mandale via BKC and Kurla

Opening: End of 2025 (Mandale to Diamond Garden stretch, 5.4 km)

Status: 78% completed; trial runs underway

A key connector between western suburbs and eastern zones like Chembur.

Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line)

Route: Colaba to SEEPZ (Underground)

Opening: August 2025 (Cuffe Parade to Aarey stretch, 11.57 km)

Status: 99.86% civil work complete

Mumbai’s first underground Metro line, part of which (9.77 km) was opened in May 2025.

Metro Lines 4 & 4A (Green Line)

Route: Wadala to Kasarvadavli and Gaimukh

Opening: Early 2026 (Gaimukh to Cadbury Junction stretch)

Status: Over 84% work done

This 35.32 km line will improve north-south mobility along the city’s central belt.

Mumbai One App: One QR, All Rides

Alongside the physical infrastructure, the Mumbai One app is poised to revolutionise how Mumbaikars commute. The app will integrate 11 transport services, including:

Suburban rail (Central, Western, Harbour lines)

Metro lines

Monorail

Buses operated by BEST, TMT, KDMT, MBMT, and NMMT

Key Features:

Map-based journey planning

One QR code for multimodal travel

Live service updates

SOS features for safety

Seamless payment integration

The app supports the Digital India mission and marks a shift toward paperless, cashless commuting, streamlining travel across one of India’s most complex urban networks.

India’s Largest Metro Training Hub Opens

To support the growing Metro network, MMRDA has inaugurated the Mandale Metro Depot, home to India’s largest Metro training centre. Equipped with high-end simulators, it will train new recruits and upskill current staff. The initiative also supports the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) by contributing to urban skill development.

A Smarter, Faster Mumbai in the Making

With infrastructure nearing completion, smart mobility tools in place, and training underway, Mumbai is making steady progress toward a more integrated and efficient public transport system. If timelines are met, commuters can expect a vastly improved experience by the end of 2025.
