Mumbai: Mumbai and its metropolitan regions continued to witness heavy rainfall in the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, and thunderstorms with light rains on Thursday throughout the day.
Owing to the change in wind patterns, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall for the districts of Mumbai, Thane and Raigad, and a Red Alert for Palghar. The warning is valid until 8.30 am on Friday.
After 8.30 am, there is no warning for heavy rains for Mumbai; however, Thane, Palghar and Raigad are placed under Yellow Alert. As per the local weather forecast for the next 48 hours, the skies in Mumbai city and suburbs will be generally cloudy with the possibility of intermittent moderate rain. The maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 31 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius.
In 24 hours (8 am on June 18 to 8 am of June 19), the Colaba observatory recorded 142.6 mm rainfall and the Santacruz observatory recorded 60.5 mm rainfall. So far this year, the City has received 405.82 mm rainfall, the eastern suburbs have received 343.68 mm rainfall and the western suburbs have received 343.13 mm rainfall.
In the 24 hours (from 9 pm on Wednesday to 9 pm on Thursday), some of the weather stations in Mumbai that recorded high rainfall included: Nariman Point Fire Station (90 mm), Colaba Pumping Station (82 mm), LBS Marg Mulund (84 mm), Anand Nagar Dahisar (78 mm) among others.
The IMD has also alerted for fairly widespread rainfall across Maharashtra. The fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea on June 20.
