Over two lakh teenagers, in the 15 to 18 age group, registered across the country on Cowin website, after the registration process for vaccination started on Saturday.

Though Maharashtra and Mumbai-specific data was not available, the BMC said it has made elaborate arrangements to vaccinate 9.22 lakh teenagers in this age group at Mumbai’s nine jumbo Covid centres.

According to the BMC, since most of the children in the eligible age group are school and college-going students, the corporation has assigned the responsibility for vaccinating them on school and college managements; they are expected to bring the targeted beneficiaries to the vaccination centres.

"The registration for vaccination began on Saturday. Teenagers can enrol on the Cowin website and take an appointment. We have also allowed walk-in vaccinations," said Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani.

"If any teenager doesn’t have an Aadhaar card, we will give him a dose after checking his school or college identity card. Our only desire is that no teenager be deprived of vaccination," Kakani said.

There are nine jumbo Covid centres in Mumbai and five booths have been reserved in each hub for teenagers. Around 250 workers have been deployed for steering the vaccination drive across Mumbai. The BMC administration has also issued directions to keep necessary vials in each demarcated booth and have a separate row for teenagers.

"As per the Central Government circular, we can only administer Covaxin to this age group, and we have 5 lakh doses of Covaxin and Covishield in our stock. So, within a week, we estimate we can give jabs to 30,000 teenagers," he said.

The State Public health department said 205,113 children had registered on the Cowin site on Saturday.
