Mumbai: Students can now participate in extra-curricular sports, cultural activities, competitions and events without missing out on examinations. Students will not have to appear for a re-examination if the activities clash with their semester, according to the recent provision of the Mumbai University (MU).

Students who participate in activities at the inter-collegiate, university, state, national or international level will have the benefit of appearing for examinations later if these events clash with their semester examinations. In addition, students participating in sports, cultural, youth festivals or National Cadet Corps (NCC) will have the same benefit.

Earlier, students would miss out on examinations as these activities would often clash with the semester, according to university officials. A senior officer of MU, said, “We have initiated this provision so that students do not have to miss any examinations or give up on their extra curricular activities. This provision is applicable to all colleges affiliated to the MU.”

Colleges will have to conduct examinations separately for these students within 30 days of regular semester examinations. Vishwadha Sawant, a teacher, said, “We will have to set additonal question papers in order to conduct separate examinations. Till now, students had to appear for an ATKT examination if they missed their regular semester. But now, we will have to conduct examinations again.”

Students are glad with this decision as it will give them the liberty to participate in different activities. Rashi Sen, a student, said, “We can now participate in various competitions at the national level without worrying much about our examinations.” While Nasir Subodh, another student, said, “We can enhance our skills and go beyond academics. College events help us to interact and meet other students and this will facilitate our growth.”
