Mumbai: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal launched infrastructure projects worth Rs 2,000 crore at Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) to enhance its capacity and efficiency. Celebrating JNPA’s milestone of exceeding 10 million TEUs, Sonowal stressed its role in advancing India’s trade.

Key projects include a solar boat, 70-tonne tugs, and fire tenders, enhancing sustainability and safety. The port achieved a record 7.05 million TEUs in 2024, with upgrades to BMCT and NSFT adding 2.4 million TEUs capacity, aiming for 10.4 million TEUs by 2027.

Major agreements for Vadhavan Port were also signed, including a Rs 645-crore PPP deal with Reliance Industries and a HUDCO-backed Rs 25,000-crore funding partnership. Additionally, a Rs 284-crore agro facility will process 1.2 million tonnes of cargo annually, while a Rs 300-crore warehouse will handle 1.2 lakh TEUs.

A CBSE school and progress in JNPA’s SEZ, now with Rs 623 crores in investments, highlight community and economic development. Sonowal reiterated India’s ports as future-ready gateways for global trade growth.
