Two people died in two separate accidents in the city on Monday.

An auto-rickshaw driver coming down the wrong side of the road rammed into a pedestrian in Santacruz (East), killing him; and a 56-year-old female teacher was killed in a hit-and-run in Jogeshwari (West).

The victim in the Santacruz (East) incident was identified as Vijay Gurav, a 49-year-old hospital technician. The Vakola police have arrested the auto driver, 26-year-old Imran Abdul Ansari.

According to the FIR, Gurav, a resident of Santacruz (East), worked at Bhatia Hospital. On Monday, around 5pm, he was going to meet his relatives nearby. Since the distance was short, he chose to walk. While he was walking on Nehru Road, he attempted to cross the road. An auto came from the wrong side from Santacruz Railway Station and collided with him, causing him to fall and sustain an injury to the back of the head.

Bystanders took him to the nearby VN Desai Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The people also took the autorickshaw driver to the hospital and handed him over to the police who were on duty there.

Nita Dhongade, the victim in the Jogeshwari accident, was riding pillion behind her husband, when a trailer truck attempted to overtake them and hit the motorcycle in the process.

The impact caused her to fall and come under the truck’s tyre. The driver fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle. The Oshiwara police registered a case against an unidentified individual.

According to the FIR, Dhongade was a resident of Dominic Colony in Malad (West) and taught at Anup High School in Jogeshwari (West). Her husband, Nitin Dhongade, 60, was taking her to the school in the morning when the accident took place.
