Mumbai: A tragic incident occurred on the night of April 27 at the New Hind Mill MHADA Complex's 1C Chintamani Cooperative Housing Society in Ghodapdeo, Mumbai. Around 8 PM, a power outage caused all three lifts in the building to stop functioning. The mishap took place in the middle lift.

Following the outage, the lift had stalled near the 10th floor. Upon learning about the situation, the building's watchman, Dharmanath Chaturgun Gupta (60), went up to the seventh or eighth floor to assess the problem. It is believed that while attempting to open the lift door with a key in the dark, he lost his balance and accidentally fell into the lift shaft.

Gupta died on the spot due to the fall. Upon being alerted, police personnel reached the scene and sent the body for post-mortem. An Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been filed at Byculla Police Station, and further investigation is underway.

Preliminary findings suggest that darkness and a possible lapse in safety measures contributed to the fatal accident. Authorities are also investigating whether the building management had adhered to lift safety regulations.

Senior Inspector Chimaji Aadhav from Byculla Police Station told FPJ that the incident occurred during the power outage, and since there were no eyewitnesses, no FIR has been registered yet. CCTV footage is being examined, and further probe is ongoing.
