Mumbai: In a deeply troubling development, a 28-year-old senior resident doctor from the Pediatrics Department at Mumbai’s state-run JJ Hospital allegedly attempted suicide by consuming an overdose of sleeping pills.

This marks the second such incident at JJ Hospital this month and the fourth in the last three months, highlighting a growing mental health crisis among resident doctors.

Sources said the doctor ingested ten 2 mg Lorazepam tablets inside the hospital premises on Wednesday. Timely intervention by a colleague, who noticed signs of distress, helped save her life. She was immediately admitted and is now under medical supervision.

Hospital authorities have confirmed the incident but stopped short of labeling it a suicide attempt. Meanwhile, JJ Marg Police have recorded the doctor’s statement, and the hospital administration has constituted an internal inquiry committee to investigate the matter.

Earlier this month, Dr. Omkar Kavitke, a 32-year-old senior resident, died by suicide after jumping off the Atal Setu bridge. The recurring pattern of such incidents has raised serious concerns about the working conditions and mental health support available to young doctors at one of Maharashtra’s premier government medical institutions.

Medical professionals and health activists are calling for urgent interventions to address stress, workload, and support mechanisms for resident doctors.
