A senior citizen tragically lost her life, and another woman was injured after a branch of a tree fell on them in a private garden at Ghatkopar East on Thursday evening. Following the incident, the fallen branch was cut and removed. The civic body will now investigate the matter before taking further action.

The incident occurred at Garodia Nagar, 90 Feet Road in Ghatkopar East at 6 pm on Thursday. Two women, identified as 60-year-old Minakshi and 56-year-old Vandana Shah, were injured when a branch of a tree fell on them. Local citizens quickly rushed them to the civic-run Rajawadi Hospital. Unfortunately, Minakshi was declared dead by the doctor on duty, while Shah is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital. Both women had been out for an evening walk in the garden when the accident took place.

According to civic officials, the tree had been declared a "dangerous" or "dead" tree, and the BMC's N Ward had issued a notice to the local residents' association in April 2024 regarding its condition. "The tree is located in a private garden managed by the local residents' association. We had issued a notice to the association in April 2024 to trim the branches of the tree. At that time, the tree was still alive," said an official from N ward. However, an official from the Garden Department said that they will verify all the documents to confirm whether the notice was served. After that, appropriate action will be taken.
