Mumbai: The number of registered cyber crime cases in Mumbai fell in the first six months of 2025, but experts warn that the actual threat remains unchanged. Between January 1 and June 30, 2025, a total of 2,188 cyber crimes were registered a decline of nearly 17% compared to 2,638 cases during the same period in 2024.

Decline Reflects Under-Reporting, Say Experts
While the drop may seem like a relief for law enforcement, cyber crime lawyer Dr. Prashant Mali clarified that the fall in numbers reflects fewer cases being officially registered, not an actual decrease in cyber criminal activity. “When FIRs are registered less, the figures automatically appear lower,” he explained. Data from the National Cyber Crime Portal supports this observation.

Top Cyber Crime Categories in 2025
Among the cases reported this year, online fraud topped the list with 207 cases, followed by obscene posts and messages (121), fake profiles and photo morphing (77), hacking (37), phishing and spoofing (26), and data theft (15).

Fraud-Related Cases Dominate
A total of 1,536 fraud-related cases were recorded, including:

Share market investment fraud – 469 cases

Job offer scams – 184 cases

Insurance and PF scams – 17 cases

Cryptocurrency fraud – 33 cases

Digital arrest scams – 103 cases

Comparison with 2024 Data
In 2024, credit card and digital fraud alone accounted for 585 cases, highlighting that financial fraud remains the biggest threat to citizens.

Criminals Nabbed, But Awareness Key
During this period, cyber police solved 566 cases and arrested 507 accused. Authorities have urged citizens to be cautious during digital transactions, avoid clicking suspicious links, and never share personal information with unknown individuals.

Tech-Driven Investigations
Police stated that, with the help of technical teams, investigations are becoming more efficient. They stressed that cyber security is no longer just a technical issue but also a matter of public awareness, urging victims to report crimes immediately.
