The 725-m long new flyover from Bandra Worli Sealink to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) is all set to be thrown open to the public by June end, said the newly appointed Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) chief SVR Srinivas on Monday.

Speaking to the Free Press Journal, Srinivas said, “All the minor pending work, including the streetlights on the flyover, will be completed by the end of June. We should be able to commission the flyover by then.”

The three flyovers were proposed to decongest Kalanagar Junction at BKC. The upcoming Sealink-BKC flyover, which is the second arm, is the main one and will help disperse traffic significantly, said the MMRDA chief.

The firm M/s. RPS Infraprojects Private Limited, sub contractor of M/s. Simplex Infrastructures Limited, was appointed in January 2020 to carry out the project.

In fact, the second arm flyover was expected to be completed by May end. However, due to the lockdown and surge in COVID-19 cases in the second wave, leading to the diversion of industrial oxygen— which is essential for construction— for medical use, the project was delayed. Besides, shortage of manpower was another hurdle.

Meanwhile, the first arm of the Sealink-BKC flyover was already commissioned in February 2021. The under construction third flyover, which is 349 m from Sion Dharavi Link Road (free left) towards the Sealink, will be ready by the end of November, according to MMRDA. MMRDA’s Kalanagar junction decongestion plan, having three flyovers, will come up at a cost of Rs 103.73 crore. The scope of work of the third flyover Sion-Dharavi link road (free left) to the Sealink has been reduced due to the Metro line integration plan. Therefore, the total project cost now stands at Rs 59.35 crore, as per MMRDA.
