Mumbai’s much-anticipated Santacruz Chembur Link Road (SCLR) Extension has achieved a significant milestone with the successful launch of a 215-meter Orthotropic Steel Deck (OSD) span over the Vakola Flyover. This marks a crucial step in ensuring seamless East-West connectivity across the city.

Metropolitan Commissioner of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, shared the development on social media, highlighting the engineering marvel of the project.

The SCLR Extension features Asia’s first cable-stayed bridge with a 100-meter sharp curvature, positioned 25 meters above the ground, spanning over the Western Express Highway. It offers a crucial link from Kurla to Panbai International School near Mumbai Airport, improving connectivity between key locations. The bridge’s innovative Y-shaped pylon enhances structural efficiency, while its two-lane carriageway is designed to facilitate smoother traffic movement.

Aimed at improving access between Navi Mumbai, the Eastern Express Highway, the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), and the airport, this landmark project is set to transform urban mobility. The 4.2-kilometer SCLR extension project began construction in 2016 and was initially scheduled for completion in 2019. However, delays due to land acquisition, particularly involving defence land, pushed the timeline forward. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently cleared a Rs 16 crore payment to defence authorities, a crucial step in moving the project closer to completion.
