Mumbai: After the recent pre-monsoon rains, Mumbai has experienced an increase in seasonal ailments like fever, cough, and respiratory problems. Physicians have noted a rise in bacterial and viral infections resulting from the sudden shift in weather from dry heat to high humidity during the last week.

The Santacruz observatory noted 34 mm of precipitation from Tuesday to Thursday, marking the heaviest May rainfall since 2021, almost quadrupling the monthly average.

This unexpected humidity interferes with the body's ability to regulate temperature, making it more challenging to fight infections. Visits to municipal hospitals by outpatients have increased by 30-40%, with prevalent symptoms being fatigue, sore throats, and ongoing coughs.

At-risk groups, such as senior citizens and individuals with existing health issues, might encounter serious complications. The BMC recommends that residents uphold hygiene, wear masks, and seek medical advice if symptoms last more than three days.

Public hospitals in Mumbai, such as KEM, Nair, and Sion, have experienced a 30-40% increase in outpatient visits recently, with numerous patients experiencing ongoing fatigue and continual coughs. The changing weather undermines immune defenses, allowing respiratory viruses to propagate more easily.

Specialists caution that pre-monsoon conditions are perfect for viral infections, leading the BMC to promote preventive actions such as cleanliness and vaccination. As additional unseasonal rainfall is anticipated, healthcare professionals emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and advise against self-treatment for persistent symptoms.

Symptoms Of Flu

Flu symptoms typically include fever, cough, body aches, chills, fatigue, and general discomfort. Additional symptoms may involve a sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headaches, and decreased appetite. Some individuals, especially children, might also experience vomiting and diarrhea. Fever indicates infection; a dry cough can be persistent; body aches primarily affect the back, legs, and head; chills signal a fever; fatigue leaves you weak; and headaches cause pain. Seek medical help for high fever, difficulty breathing, severe pain, confusion, or worsening health conditions.
