Mumbai: Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Mumbai on Monday morning after a continued downpour since Sunday. As the city continued to reel under heavy rainfall since morning today, a video from an air-conditioned local train showing rainwater leaking through AC vents sparked outrage among commuters and citizens online.
Viral Video Shows Water Leaking In AC Local Train Coach
The clip, which quickly went viral on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), showed passengers wiping off water inside a packed coach, visibly disturbed by the leaking roof during peak morning hours.
The video was shared by a user named 'jai ho', with the caption: "This is Mumbai’s AC local… All rainwater coming inside. For this we pay so much ??????" The user tagged key authorities, including the Railway Ministry, Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Central and Western Railway.
Railway Responds To Viral Video
Responding to the post, RailwaySeva acknowledged the complaint and escalated it to the Mumbai Division of Central Railway for necessary action. RailwaySeva, An Official Twitter Account for support to RailUsers, responded to the viral video by a comment tagging the official X Account of Mumbai Division - Central Railway stating, "For necessary action escalated to the concerned official."
The incident raised serious questions about the maintenance and preparedness of Mumbai’s suburban rail system during the monsoon. AC locals, which are meant to offer comfort during travel, are now facing criticism for failing to deliver basic protection against weather conditions.
Waterlogging Reported In Several Parts
Meanwhile, the city witnessed relentless rainfall since Sunday night, resulting in widespread waterlogging, especially in the western suburbs and South Mumbai.
Areas like Marine Drive, Andheri, Kurla, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus were affected, with visuals showing partially submerged roads and stranded commuters. The Andheri subway was temporarily closed, while traffic on LBS Road in Kurla, DP Road in Powai and Saki Naka crawled due to flooded streets.
Local Trains Services & Air Travel Disrupted
Local train services on the Central and Harbour lines experienced delays, adding to commuter woes. Air travel was also impacted, with airlines such as IndiGo issuing passenger advisories. IndiGo’s statement urged flyers to leave early for the airport, citing slow-moving traffic and difficult weather conditions. The airline also assured passengers that ground teams were working to minimize disruptions.
Orange Alert Issued For City
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport also issued a weather alert, requesting passengers to confirm flight status before travelling and arrive earlier to avoid traffic delays. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai Suburban, while neighbouring Thane and Palghar remain on yellow alert.
