Mumbai: Heavy rainfall battered the city on Friday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the city. Continuous heavy rainfall since Thursday night disrupted daily life across several parts of Mumbai, with the western suburbs bearing the brunt.

Areas like Dahisar, Borivali, Kandivali, Malad, Goregaon, Jogeshwari and Andheri witnessed intense rainfall through the morning, causing widespread waterlogging and slowing down vehicular movement.

Details On Rainfall Recorded In City

Between 8 am and 11 am today, the city recorded heavy rainfall levels, especially in the western suburbs. The highest rainfall was reported at the Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Hospital in Jogeshwari, which recorded 67.3 mm in just three hours. Other heavily affected locations included Malpa Dongri Municipal School in Andheri (66.6 mm), Nariyalwadi School in Santacruz (65.4 mm), and the KE Ward Office in Andheri East (65.2 mm).

In the eastern suburbs, the N Ward Office (Ghatkopar) logged 58.8 mm of rainfall, while Tembipada School in Bhandup recorded 57.8 mm, followed by Ramabai School in Ghatkopar with 53.4 mm and Paspoli School in Powai at 52.6 mm. Vikhroli’s Building Proposal Office also recorded over 51 mm during the same time frame.

The island city areas saw relatively lighter rainfall. Pratiksha Nagar School in Sion recorded 30.2 mm, while Ravli Camp reported the lowest among the monitored locations with 22.3 mm. High waves were also observed along the Mumbai coastline, prompting additional caution for residents in coastal areas.

Andheri Subway Closed

The intense showers led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas, particularly in Andheri. The Andheri Subway, a known flood-prone zone, was submerged under 1 to 1.5 feet of water, forcing the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to shut it for vehicular movement.

Traffic police issued an advisory rerouting vehicles via the Gokhale and Thackeray bridges. “Due to 1-1.5 ft waterlogging, the Andheri Subway is closed for vehicular movement,” the Mumbai Traffic Police said in a post on X.

Orange Alert Issued For City

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane, while Palghar district remains under a yellow alert. With the monsoon remaining active over the Konkan belt, moderate to heavy rains are expected to continue throughout the day, possibly leading to more disruptions in low-lying and high-traffic areas.
