Mumbai: Mumbai and its neighbouring districts are set to face another spell of intense rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar on Thursday, warning of heavy to very heavy showers throughout the day.

Mumbai, meanwhile, has been experiencing intermittent rain since early morning, and civic authorities have been asked to remain on high alert. No major waterlogging has been reported in low-lying areas as of now, however, if the rains continue to batter the city, flooding is expected.

Vulnerable spots such as Sion, King’s Circle, Hindmata, Kurla, Andheri Subway and the Dahisar and Malad underpasses are kept under constant watch. With high tide expected later in the day, the BMC has advised citizens to monitor official updates and plan their movement accordingly.

Apart from Mumbai, the IMD has also placed Nashik’s ghat regions under orange alert. Central Maharashtra, including parts of Marathwada, is likely to see moderate rainfall, while Vidarbha is under a yellow alert, indicating isolated heavy showers.

Red Alert In Konkan

The IMD also flagged a red alert for the Konkan coast and adjoining ghat regions for the next two days, signalling the monsoon’s renewed strength across Maharashtra. According to the IMD’s latest forecast, several parts of the state are likely to experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the next four days.

The coastal districts of Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are expected to bear the brunt, with torrential downpours predicted today and tomorrow. Pune, Satara and Kolhapur’s ghat regions are also under red alert, prompting local authorities to urge residents to avoid non-essential travel and stay indoors.

Thunderstorms Along With Gusty Winds Predicted

The weather office has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 30 to 40 kmph in some parts of the state. Residents have been urged to stay away from trees, old structures, and exposed areas during stormy spells.

With rain intensity expected to peak over the next 24 to 48 hours, the state administration has asked district-level authorities to remain prepared for any emergency. Citizens have been requested to follow weather advisories, avoid venturing out during heavy rainfall, and contact helplines in case of emergencies. As the monsoon regains momentum, the next few days will be crucial for Maharashtra, especially in flood-prone and hilly areas.
