Mumbai: While Mumbai's future is dependant on the missing links in its road infrastructure, citizens are eyeing on the proposed road in Dadar planned under Development Plan (DP) 2034. The road will connect Senapati Bapat Marg in Dadar West to Dadasaheb Falke Marg in Dadar East and is expected to reduce traffic congestion significantly.

The proposed DP Road connecting Senapati Bapat Marg in Dadar West to Dadasaheb Falke Marg in Dadar East has been part of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan and is essential for easing vehicular traffic in one of the busiest areas of Mumbai.

The proposed road, spanning approximately 800 meters in length and 60 feet in width, is expected to link key junctions such as the Tata Mills compound at Hindmata Junction and the flower market on Senapati Bapat Marg.

By connecting the eastern and western parts of Dadar, this road is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce delays, and provide an alternative to the existing overburdened Tilak Bridge and Elphinstone (Prabhadevi) Bridge. Activists have demanded that the proposed road should be constructed immediately to solve traffic issues in the city.

Chakachak Dadar Social Organisation, a non-government organisation working for betterment of Dadar and its residents, has written to Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner requesting urgent completion of the construction of the proposed DP road.

It highlighted that the arterial road experiences perennial traffic jams due to the high volume of vehicles, including intercity buses, tempos, and heavy vehicles like garbage vans and desilting tankers of Dadar Pumping Station.

It also highlighted the strategic importance of Dadar as a critical junction connecting the Central and Western Railway lines, where over 35,000 40,000 vehicles navigate the area daily. It alleged that the lack of an efficient east-west connectivity route is worsening the problem due to bottlenecks on Senapati Bapat Marg.

Chakachak Dadar mentioned that the under-construction Tilak Bridge and Elphinstone Bridge are over a century old and are insufficient to handle the growing traffic. It said that the addition of the DP road will provide a much-needed alternative, particularly during the reconstruction period of these bridges and also Sewri-Worli Elevated Corridor (MTHL).

Chetan Kamble, founder of Chakachak Dadar, said, “Developing this DP road will not only support smooth transit but also facilitate economic activities in the region, as the rapid rise of commercial complexes and business hubs in the Parel-Worli belt has further increased the traffic load on Senapati Bapat Marg.

The traffic department has already endorsed the construction of the DP road, and its implementation at the earliest would be a proactive measure to address the mounting traffic challenges,” said.
