The Amravati police on Wednesday started taking preventive action against people who were found to be issuing threats to those posting on social media in support of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.
A global controversy erupted earlier this year after Sharma, in a live television debate, made derogatory comments about the Prophet Mohammed. Sharma had to apologise and was suspended from her post and several FIRs, too, were registered against her.
The fall-out of her remarks was also observed in several places like Udaipur and Amravati, where those speaking in her support on social media were brutally murdered.
Even as Amravati’s Umesh Kolhe murder case was handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Amravati police on Wednesday detained four people for allegedly issuing death threats to other citizens who had posted in Sharma’s favour.
“Preventive action was taken against the accused,” said police inspector Nilima Araj, Kotwali police station.
The Amravati police have appealed to citizens to come forward and report any such threats immediately, while also warning them against posting inflammatory content on social media.
