Days after 45-year-old techie from Kharghar, Shiv Kumar Sharma, was killed by two motorbike-borne assailants with a helmet, police hope to trace them with the help of technical evidence. However, the lab report of blurred images of their vehicle’s registration number is still awaited.
The police said they have traced the toll naka timing of the accused entering Navi Mumbai and leaving the satellite city. The Mumbai police, along with the Kharghar police and the crime branch, have formed 10 teams to hunt for the accused. An officer privy to the investigation said each team has been assigned a different task. He said they are investigating suspected areas of their residence pocket by pocket.
In further investigations, the police have retraced the sequence of events during the fight between the deceased and assailants over overtaking. An officer said Sharma overtook the accused twice, which led to an argument with the accused. The officer said, “This escalated into a fight and Sharma kicked one of the two accused before they assaulted him with a helmet. It’s a case of road rage and not a communal dispute.” He added that the duo was seen leaving Kharghar at around 10.30pm.

Even though an eyewitness shot the video of the assault, the scooty used by the accused was not captured; neither could any CCTV camera capture the registration number.
The officer said, “We are not depending on the lab results, as even if one digit of the number goes wrong, the investigation will change its route. As of now, we are completely relying on technical analysis.”
