Mumbai: The Mumbai police on Tuesday filed a plea for further investigation in connection with the murder of late NCP leader and former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique. The plea was moved before the special MCOCA court and is now scheduled for a hearing next week.

About The Case

Siddique, 66, was killed on October 12, 2024, near his son Zeeshan Siddique’s office in Bandra. Three assailants, allegedly members of Bishnoi’s gang, opened fire on the car Baba had entered as he prepared to leave the office. The attack was swift, leaving no opportunity for his guards to react. The assailants were apprehended by the police while attempting to flee.

The Mumbai police has filed a chargesheet against 26 persons accused of involvement in the murder. According to the police, the killing was ordered by Anmol Bishnoi, who heads the gang. On Tuesday, the Mumbai Police moved a plea seeking permission to continue further investigation under Section 193 (9) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). As per the new law, the prosecution can seek further investigation after filing the chargesheet, which has to be completed within 90 days of the order.

However, the court can extend the period if convinced. The court has now issued notices to all the defence lawyers, asking them to submit their replies to the plea. It has also called for a report from the special public prosecutor on the matter.

The plea comes at a time when the police are probing a complaint lodged regarding a threatening email received by Zeeshan Siddique. The family’s lawyer, Trivankumar Karnani, has stated that they will submit their report on the plea after reviewing the application filed by the police.
