Mumbai: The Amboli police have registered an FIR against a woman for allegedly posing as a doctor and securing an investment of Rs9.68 crore on the pretext of carrying out clinical research on cancer treatment.

According to the police, the case was filed on February 25 following a complaint by Shaira Khan, who resides in Andheri West, against Shahnila Ahtisham Saiyyad. However, the details about how the two met and the complainant’s profession were not mentioned in the FIR; neither the police disclosed the same.

According to Khan, Saiyyad told her that she was a doctor conducting research on cancer treatment at the DY Patil Medical College in Navi Mumbai. She allegedly lured the complainant into investing money in her project, promising to double the investment and offering a monthly interest of 4% to 5%.

Subsequently, Khan transferred Rs10.25 crore to Saiyyad's accounts in ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and IndusInd Bank, said the FIR. These transactions took place between October 30, 2023 and September 7, 2024. The accused returned Rs1.18 crore to the complainant, claiming it was a profit, said the police.

However, Khan later alleged that this amount was not a profit, instead a partial return of her own investment. Later, she discovered that Saiyyad had not used the funds for research but misappropriated them for personal use.

Based on her complaint, a case has been registered under sections 316(2) (criminal breach of trust) and 318(4) (cheating and fraud involving dishonest inducement to deliver property or valuable securities) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
