Mumbai: In a major enforcement drive, Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across Mumbai (Central, West, and East), Borivali, and Pune have taken action against 36 vehicle dealers for failing to comply with trade certificate regulations. As a result, 34 vehicles have been seized for violations under the Motor Vehicles Act.
As per the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, every vehicle dealer, showroom, or establishment engaged in the sale, trade, or display of vehicles must obtain a separate trade certificate for each location from the concerned registration authority. Selling vehicles without this certificate is a punishable offense under Section 192 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The special inspection drive was initiated recently following directives from Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, who ordered strict enforcement of trade certificate regulations.
"The crackdown comes in response to a complaint filed by Pritpal Singh and Associates, Gurugram, alleging that an Electric Vehicle Mobility company was operating multiple showroom and service center locations across the state with a single trade certificate, violating regulatory norms. Acting on the complaint, the Transport Minister has directed an immediate investigation and submission of a detailed report." said an official.
Authorities have warned vehicle dealers to comply with trade certificate requirements, emphasizing that violations will result in strict penalties, including seizure of vehicles and legal action.
"The transport department will continue the inspection drive in coming months other regions to ensure compliance across the state" further added official.
