Mumbai: The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) party is once more taking an aggressive stance on the Marathi language matter in Maharashtra. On Thursday, MNS activists visited several banks in Ulhasnagar, where they removed posters written in English.
This assertive position comes after MNS Chief Raj Thackeray’s recent address at a Gudi Padwa rally, where he reaffirmed his party's position on making Marathi compulsory for official use. Since that time, the leaders of his party have aggressively addressed the language issue.
They encountered the bank managers and insisted that all the posters and banners in the bank be displayed in Marathi within 24 hours. They also insisted that all bank employees who do not speak Marathi must learn the language within a month and communicate in it, or they warned of consequences in MNS fashion after the month ends.
MNS's District Head Bandu Deshmukh stated, "Although the Maharashtra government has given a definite directive to enforce Marathi as compulsory in the daily functions of all institutions in Maharashtra, certain bank employees and officials are showing disregard for the Marathi language by utilizing English and other languages on a daily basis." Following the MNS protest, the police apprehended a few MNS workers who were subsequently freed. The demonstration was arranged under the guidance of MNS's District Head Bandu Deshmukh and Ulhasnagar's MNS City Head Sanjay Ghuge. The two leaders, accompanied by their followers, went to various private and government banks in Ulhasnagar and ripped down posters and banners in English.
According to report by Times Of India, Sanjay Ghuge, on the other hand, stated, "We have informed bank officers and employees unfamiliar with Marathi that they need to learn it within a month and promptly implement Marathi as a requirement in the bank's daily activities, or else we will respond in our own manner."
