Aiming to upgrade facilities and enhance hygiene standards, Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha has urged the BMC to scrap its current 30-year public toilet contract system, calling it overly restrictive and inadequate for citizens' needs. He has recommended introducing a new and more efficient contract mechanism.

300 Citizens Participate in Sion-Koliwada Grievance Hearing

During a public grievance hearing in the F/North ward of the Sion-Koliwada constituency, residents voiced strong concerns over the deteriorating condition of public toilets. Complaints included leaking roofs, broken doors, lack of lighting, and unhygienic conditions. Citizens criticised a decades-old contract that allegedly enables contractors to operate toilets without ensuring basic maintenance or amenities.

Highlighting these grievances, Lodha urged the BMC to terminate the outdated contract system and implement a more transparent and accountable framework.

BMC Officials Directed to Take Immediate Action

In a letter to Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, Lodha called for urgent reforms. He also directed Assistant Municipal Commissioner Arun Kshirsagar, who was present at the hearing, to take immediate and corrective action.

Direct Interaction Initiative Under CM’s Grassroots Outreach Plan

Around 300 citizens, both online and offline, actively participated in the hearing. The meeting provided residents an opportunity to interact directly with officials from multiple departments, all under one roof. These ward-wise public grievances hearings are being conducted in line with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' directive for cabinet members to engage closely with the public and address issues at the grassroots level through direct interaction.
