Mumbai: The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has informed the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) that it has taken action against an allegedly illegal hospital operating in Kandivali, including cancellation of its registration and initiation of legal proceedings against it.

The move comes in response to a complaint filed by Mumbai-based citizen Shravan Rajpurohit, who alleged administrative inaction over the unauthorized functioning of Trident Hospital.

According to Rajpurohit’s complaint, Trident Hospital was carrying out unauthorized construction and operating without a valid license. He submitted documents obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, including a response from MCGM dated September 19, 2024, which confirmed that the hospital had not been issued any license to operate.

Alleging gross negligence on part of the public health authorities, Rajpurohit filed a complaint before the SHRC against the Principal Secretary of the Public Health Department and the Municipal Commissioner of MCGM, accusing them of failing to take prompt action against the hospital.

Following this, the SHRC had summoned officials, directing them to conduct a fact-finding inquiry and file affidavits in response. In its affidavit, MCGM stated that Trident Hospital had initially been registered as a nursing home at Room Nos. 7 and 8 in Puja Enclave, Kandivali.

However, after finding serious lapses, the civic body issued a notice in August 2024, and subsequently cancelled the hospital’s registration on August 28, 2024, under the Bombay Nursing Home Registration Act, 1949.

The MCGM further informed the commission that despite the cancellation, a second unauthorized hospital, that also operating under the name “Trident Hospital”, which was later discovered at Room Nos. 5, 6, and 26 in the same building.

Since this new facility was functioning without a valid license, the corporation lodged an FIR under Sections 3 and 6 of the Bombay Nursing Home Registration Act. The matter is currently under investigation.

“Additionally, a public notice has been pasted at the hospital’s premises declaring it as unregistered, to inform and caution the public at large,” reads the corporation’s reply.

After reviewing the submissions, the SHRC noted that the MCGM had taken all necessary actions against the illegal facility and had also moved to raise public awareness. The commission subsequently closed the complaint, stating that it was devoid of any substance as appropriate steps had already been taken by the authorities.
