Mumbai: Around 60 residents were evacuated after a highrise in Powai caught fire on Thursday. The blaze erupted in the electric duct of Sai Sapphire building, a 24-storeyed residential tower near Gopal Sharma International School.

The incident was reported at 9.34 am and the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) rushed to the spot. The MFB evacuated the stranded residents in the building through the staircase. The blaze was extinguished at noon and no injuries were reported.

The fire broke out in the electric duct and spread through from 9 to the 21st floor, confining the electric wirings and installations in the duct. Soon, the building was filled with dense smoke and residents were left stranded. However, they were swiftly evacuated by the firefighters.

Notably, the Chandivali Citizens Welfare Association took to social media to voice that a mini fire station near the spot of the incident has been lying defunct. The residents highlighted that despite repeated complaints, the MFB has failed to start the mini fire station.

This is the second incident of a fire in a residential high-rise in Mumbai within a month. On February 28, a fire erupted in the newly constructed 57-storeyed Salsette 27 building in Byculla East. The blaze started in an under-renovation flat on the 42nd floor. No injuries were reported in the incident.
