Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is expected to roll out the Health Management Information System (HMIS) across its major hospitals by next month. The initiative is aimed at boosting efficiency and saving time for both patients and doctors. The platform will also enable hospital administrators to monitor bed occupancy, medicine inventories, and operation theatre schedules in real time.
According to a senior official from the civic health department, the HMIS platform will provide real-time access to patient records, lab reports, and treatment histories. It will eliminate the need for patients to carry physical documents and help doctors make faster, better-informed decisions.
The digital system will first be launched at Mumbai’s KEM Hospital and subsequently expanded to nine other suburban hospitals, including Rajawadi, MW Desai, Kandivali Shatabdi, and Kurla Bhabha. Around 26 maternity homes across the city will also be brought under the system. Additional hospitals will be integrated in phases.
“The platform will also enable hospital administrators to monitor bed occupancy, medicine inventories, and operation theatre schedules in real time. This digital transformation will significantly enhance the efficiency and responsiveness of BMC-run healthcare facilities,” said the official.
The BMC has already awarded a Rs 351.95 crore contract for the implementation of HMIS over the next five years. The scope of work includes software and hardware deployment, manpower support, operations, and ongoing maintenance.
“This is one of the largest digital healthcare transformation projects ever undertaken by a civic body in India. It will ensure greater transparency, efficiency, and coordination in patient care,” the official said.
Originally, HMIS implementation was planned for 2022–23 as part of BMC’s broader strategy to modernize Mumbai’s public health infrastructure. However, delays in vendor selection, system integration issues, and the enforcement of the 2024 Lok Sabha election model code of conduct pushed the timeline forward.
