Mumbai: In a major development for residents affected by the Elphinstone Bridge project, it has been decided that all displaced families will receive newly redeveloped homes at the same site, announced Minister Adv. Ashish Shelar. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will take on the responsibility of redeveloping all 19 impacted buildings near the bridge.
This significant decision was finalized during a high-level meeting at Sahyadri Guest House on Monday, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
During the meeting Shelar, raising concerns on behalf of local residents, highlighted that although initial plans suggested that all 19 buildings would be affected, revised assessments now show only two buildings facing direct impact. This revision comes as a major relief for the community.
However, Shelar emphasized that residents remain anxious about the structural stability of the remaining buildings during bridge construction. He proposed that instead of waiting for private developers, the MMRDA should directly handle the redevelopment of all 19 buildings under Section 33(9) of the redevelopment policy. Chief Minister Fadnavis agreed to this proposal.
The discussion was also held during the meeting that two directly impacted buildings should not be permanently relocated to Kurla as previously planned. Instead, they be offered temporary housing there, with a guarantee of returning to their original neighborhood after redevelopment. This proposal was also accepted by CM Fadnavis.
Now, residents will be temporarily accommodated at Kurla during the construction period, and after redevelopment, all 19 buildings' residents will receive new homes at the same location.
